Welcome to Nuclear Locator for
PrimaryScreenshot1

Do you wonder how close you are to a nuclear reactor? This App tells you how far you, or any other location you like, are from the world's nuclear reactors. You can learn how far your home, your place of work, your mother's house, or grandma's house, is from the nearest reactor, or any other nuclear reactor. How close is a school your children are attending or a house you are considering buying from a nuclear facility?

This App was created for the purpose of letting individuals know how close they are to nuclear power facilities, and not to comment on nuclear safety or to make any recommendations.

Active nuclear power stations in the United States, France, Japan, the United Kingdom, Germany, Sweden, Belgium, Brazil, Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Finland, Hungary, India, Mexico, the Netherlands, Pakistan, Romania, South Africa, Argentina, Armenia, Switzerland, the Ukraine, Taiwan, South Korea, China and Russia are shown. There are 426 nuclear reactors in 185 sites generating almost 386,000 megawatts included. Research, inactive, planned and under construction reactors are not shown, but may be added if interest warrants.

INSTRUCTIONS:

How to Use: When you start the App the map shows an initial Selected Location of the Empire State Building in New York City and the closest nuclear facility. If you zoom out on the map you will see all the other nuclear facilities.

You have two choices:

(1) If you press "Use Current Location", your iPad will find your current location, use it as your Selected Location, and show your nearest nuclear facility. If you zoom out on the map you will see all the other nuclear facilities.

(2) Or you can type any address you want to use as your Selected Location in the text box which initially reads Empire State Building and either press the Return Key on the keyboard or the "Use Typed Location" button. The App will then show your Selected Location and the nearest nuclear facility. If you zoom out on the map you will see all the other nuclear facilities. You can type in generally known landmarks, such as Empire State Building or Eiffel Tower, city names (remember to add a comma and the state or country), addresses, or zip codes. Remember to verify that the App actually used the location you intended.

In both cases a red pin will appear on the map for each nuclear facility and one for your Selected Location. A blue dot will also indicate your Current Location. If you pressed the "Use Current Location" button there will be a red pin in the blue dot. If you press any nuclear facility pin it will tell you the facility's name and the distance from your actual or selected location in miles and kilometers as well as how many reactors are in the facility, its power generation level, when it went into service and, if available, when its license will expire. Distances are the shortest great circle distance.

If the closest nuclear facility is within 50 miles of your Selected Location a Notice box will appear on the iPad's screen telling you how many facilities are within 50 miles and the distance to the closest in miles and kilometers. The 50 mile distance is not intended to indicate any type of danger zone. It only reflects a distance recently used by one government in the reactor failure in Japan.

You can use iPad gestures on the map to pan in on your location or on the reactor location or to zoom out and see a wider area. Double tapping on the map will zoom the display in. Tapping on the map with two fingers will zoom the display out. If you zoom in far enough you can see your Selected Location or a nuclear facility in detail.

If you select the "Change Display" button the map will change between a pure map display, a hybrid display showing the map and an aerial photo or just an aerial photo display.

This App requires that your iPad be connected to the internet for mapping and geolocation services. If you do not have a connection a warning message will appear.

The above iPad screen shows the display zoomed out to show red pins for worldwide nuclear reactor power facilities. The pin for the Kola Nuclear Facility in Russia has been clicked, displaying some facts. The Kola facility is 4047.65 miles from the Empire State Building in New York, has 4 reactors generating 1760 megawatts. Its reactors were started between 1973 and 1984.

The above iPad screen shows two red pins, one for the Empire State Building in New York City, the selected location, and one for the Indian Point Nuclear Facility located 36.02 miles from the Empire State Building. The Indian Point Facility has 2 reactors generating 2045 megawatts, which were started in 1974 and 1976. Their licenses will expire in 2013 and 2015. Because the facility is within 50 miles from the user selected location a red Notice Box is also displayed.
